In 2024, we were disappointed when a Sacramento Food bank program was closed and we no longer were going to receive protein and more substantial foods. We wondered how we would provide for the over 50K families that visit our foodbank every year? Vegetables and canned food were still available but it was now harder to serve the community with protein, dairy and other perishable foods.
Enter, Amazon Fresh. In 2024 we got word that Amazon Fresh was looking to partner with local charities. We made the phone call and connected with the team at the Sacramento Amazon Fresh location. We started picking up surplus and donations twice a week, and this week we have been asked to pick up seven days a week.
Now we have a rotation of volunteers who make sure that every day of the week someone picks up and stores the donations from Amazon Fresh in the Purpose and Legacy food bank. Our numbers are going up every month. Last month (July 2025) nine thousand people (9000) came through our doors to receive food aid; that’s about 2500 families from the Sacramento community.
Paul was one of those people. His business had suffered some losses and he needed help for his family. The food bank is open to everyone so we were glad to open the pantry to him. But, the collaboration goes further. Paul? volunteered to do the pickups and help the Purpose and Legacy food bank and drive the food from Amazon Fresh to our warehouse. This is community members helping community members. This is how Purpose and Legacy connects families with food and builds a network of support.
